Auto Rentals
Major car rental companies operating include Avis, Budget, Dollar and Hertz. Reservations should be made well in advance. A valid US driver's license is adequate for up to three months per visit. Driving is on the left side of the road.
Taxis
Most taxis charge by zone.There are fixed charges for some trips as outlined below.
Taxis on New Providence are metered. Charges are: one or two passengers, first on-fourth of a mile, $1.20, with each additional quarter-mile 20-cents. Each additional passenger is approximately $2.00. These costs are approximate and are subject to change, so please use them only as a guide. Taxis and vans are also available for hire by the hour. In addition, there is bus service between the hotels as well as to and from downtown Nassau several times a day. Besides taxis and buses, there are jitneys and private limousines available throughout the island.
Language & Culture
The official Bahamian language is English, generally intertwined with a distinct Bahamian dialect. Some Indian words have maintained their use. Many ascpectsof daily life, including music, suggests a strong religious background and way of life. Traces of African rhythms, Caribbean Calypso, English folk songs, and The Bahamas' own Goombay beat can be heard in Bahamian music.
Time Zone
Eastern Standard Time is used and Eastern Daylight Savings Time is adopted during the summer.
Customs
Customs Duty - Baggae declaration by temporary visitors is oral; but the baggage is subject to Customs Inspection. In case there are dutiable articles, the visitor will be required to complete a Baggage Declaration Form.
Each adult is allowed 50 cigars or 200 cigarettes or one pound of tobacco and one quart of spirits free of Customs Duty, in addition to personal effects. In addition, purchases up to a value of $100 are permitted by all arriving passengers. Household effects, such as china, furniture, linens and appliances are dutiable. All new purchases should be accompanied by valid certificate invoices and used household effects are subject to assessment by Customs Officers.
Customs Departure - Duty Free Allowance - United states residents, including minors may take home duty-free purchases up to $600 in retail value, if they have been out of the United States more than 48 hours, and have not taken the exemption in the past 30 days. The exemption may include up to two US quart (32 US oz.) of liquor per person over 21. A family may pool exemptions (if living in same house).
Passports and Visas
US or Canadian citizens visiting The Bahamas must have proof of citizenship in the form of US or Canadian passport or birth certificate (photo I.D. needed as well). Non-US citizens traveling from the US must have a valid passport and either a US Visa or registered alien card (green card).
Departure Tax
Each adult leaving The Bahamas must pay $15 Departure Tax in cash. Children under the age of 6 years are exempt. Visitors departing The Bahamas for most US destinations clear US Customs prior to departure. No further US Customs formalities are required on arrival in the US
